Blizzard’s Three Big Moves at BlizzCon 2026
BlizzCon 2026 brought together long-term plans for Blizzard’s biggest brands, led by Diablo V, a new StarCraft shooter, and World of Warcraft: Forever.

BlizzCon 2026 brought Blizzard’s long-term plans for its biggest brands together on the same stage. Announcements for Diablo V, a new StarCraft shooter, and World of Warcraft: Forever took center stage at the event. They were joined by a new campaign for Warcraft III: Reforged and several additional updates.
A new era for Sanctuary with Diablo V
One of the event’s biggest headlines was Diablo V. Blizzard announced the series’ next mainline game with a target window of spring 2029. According to the framework shared, this time the story begins at a point where Sanctuary has already been lost. In other words, the world moves beyond the familiar cycle of struggle.
Diablo IV is not being shelved entirely, either. Season of Hell’s Legacy begins on September 16. This season arrives with content celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Prime Evils and Deckard Cain are returning. Rewards and gear inspired by earlier Diablo games are also being added in the update.
Blizzard also plans to bring the Amazon class to Diablo IV in the first half of 2027. For Nintendo Switch 2 users, Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection launches on September 16. This version includes cross-platform multiplayer and cross-progression support. That way, the company is keeping the current game alive while preparing the next mainline entry.
The StarCraft shooter leaves RTS behind
The StarCraft announcement took the series in a very different direction from its roots. Blizzard revealed that it is working on an open-world, story-driven shooter. The game is planned for spring 2030. The choice stood out because it moves the StarCraft name away from strategy.
Franchise lead Dan Hay said the game will follow a Terran Marine. The narrative will center on a single character. That character’s journey will follow a classic story structure with a beginning, middle, and end. Hay also confirmed that the game will not be built around a seasonal model and will have a definitive ending.
In earlier comments, Hay had already offered some hints about the game’s tone. He described a structure set within a small cast of characters but with a world that feels expansive. There is still time before we see the final result, but Blizzard is clearly tying StarCraft to a full beginning-to-end adventure this time rather than a long-running cycle.
